2. Selfie verification

To confirm your photos are of you, we ask for a selfie when you apply. A member of our team compares it by eye with your profile photos. We don't use facial recognition software, and we don't create facial scans or any other biometric data.

  • We use the selfie only to verify your identity and prevent fake profiles.
  • It is never shown to other members and never shared outside SCENE, except with the provider that hosts our data.
  • We delete it within 30 days of the review decision.

3. How we use your information

  • To review your application and decide whether to approve it
  • To run the Service: showing your profile, The List, likes, matches and messages
  • To process payments, free periods, renewals and cancellations
  • To keep SCENE safe: verifying identities, reviewing reports, removing people who break our Terms, and preventing fraud
  • To feature members publicly on The List and Instagram, if your feature setting is on
  • To pay Founding Partners commission on members they referred
  • To send service emails, such as approval, renewal reminders and security notices, and, if you agree, news about SCENE
  • To understand how SCENE is used and improve it
  • To meet legal obligations and enforce our Terms

4. What other people can see

  • Members can see your profile: photos, first name, age, occupation and the other profile details you add.
  • The public, if your feature setting is on, can see your profile photo, first name, occupation and position on The List on our website, and may see you in SCENE's Instagram posts and stories.
  • Never shown to anyone: your selfie, contact details, messages, who you've liked, who you've matched with, and your payment details.

You can switch the feature setting off at any time in settings.

5. Who we share it with

We don't sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We share it only with:

  • Service providers who help us run SCENE, under contracts limiting their use of it: cloud hosting and database providers, payment processors (Stripe and Apple), our email provider and analytics providers
  • Founding Partners, who see only that someone signed up through their link and the commission owed, not your profile or messages
  • Instagram, when we feature you with your setting on
  • Authorities, where the law requires it or to protect someone's safety
  • A buyer or successor, if SCENE is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets

6. How long we keep it

  • Applications that aren't approved: deleted within 90 days of the decision, including photos
  • Selfie: deleted within 30 days of the review decision
  • Active members: for as long as your account is open
  • After you delete your account: deleted within 30 days, except what we must keep for legal, tax, fraud-prevention or safety reasons, such as payment records and records of removals for serious misconduct

7. Your choices and rights

You can edit your profile, switch the feature setting off, and delete your account at any time in settings.

If you live in California, you have the right to:

  • know what personal information we collect, use and disclose
  • access a copy of it
  • correct it
  • delete it
  • opt out of its sale or sharing (we don't sell or share it)
  • limit our use of sensitive personal information (we use it only for the purposes allowed by law)
  • not be treated differently for using these rights

To use these rights, email hello@datethescene.com. We'll verify your identity before responding, usually within 45 days. You can use an authorised agent. People in other states may have similar rights, and we'll honour requests from anywhere where we reasonably can.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and tell us if you suspect your account has been compromised.

9. Under-18s

SCENE is for adults 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn we have, we delete it and remove the account.

10. International users

SCENE is based in and operates from the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information is processed in the United States.
